What To Expect

On You're Fishing Adventure

On a fishing trip with LFA Guide Service, expect a welcoming, relaxed, and safe environment where excellent customer service is a priority. You’ll enjoy memorable experiences, catch plenty of fish, and have many photos to cherish.

Pre-Trip Preparations

Heres a quick list of the things you are going to need to bring for the trip!

  • All weather related clothing
  • lunch/snacks
  • appropriate licenses for area fishing (This includes the Columbia River Endorsement if needed)
  • On Fly fishing trips clients are welcome to bring their own gear if they prefer.

Day Of The Trip

Trip launch times vary depending on the species we’re targeting and our clients’ scheduling needs.
  • McKenzie River trips launch mid-morning and conclude in late afternoon.
  • Steelhead trips meet pre-dawn and conclude in late afternoon based on water flow. These are typically long days.

Getting On The Water

On most trips, we meet clients at the take-out points so they can leave with their fish immediately at the conclusion of the trip. If we fish in areas without available shuttles, there may be some delay due to vehicle shuttling. Safety briefings and introductions to the team and equipment are provided.

During The Trip

At LFA Guide Service, we love to educate while fishing and encourage you to ask questions about fish and fishing techniques. During the summer on the McKenzie River, when using spinning techniques, we provide multiple fishing rods per client because the action can be fast and furious. When fly fishing, we supply top-quality rods and encourage clients to take time to “read the hatch” and try their favorite flies. For our “Introduction to Fly Fishing” trips, we stop at some of our favorite spots to work on presentation and mending techniques. Our RiverWolf drift boat can be configured with front and rear casting braces to maximize your fly fishing experience.

Our Commitment to Fun and Courtesy on the River

Fishing is supposed to be fun, and we believe in “River Karma.” We are always courteous and helpful to clients and others fishing on the river. Coaching is a big part of our service, and we always strive to make our clients comfortable in the boat, on the river, and landing fish. Some of the techniques we use, especially side-drifting, tend to lose a lot of gear, which we discuss at the beginning of every trip. We come prepared with plenty of gear. On tough days, side-drifting is sometimes the only way to catch the elusive Winter Steelhead.

Winter Steelhead Trips

Winter Steelhead trips with LFA Guide Service are full-day adventures that traverse some of Oregon’s most scenic coastal rivers. Steelhead are a special fish that require patience and a variety of techniques. We provide top-quality rods rigged for side-drifting, bobber dogging, and vertical float fishing.

Breaks

During our trip, we’ll provide plenty of breaks and downtime for meals and other necessities. Pulling over to take a break allows us to reset gear, grab a snack, and stretch our legs, ensuring everyone stays comfortable and refreshed.

Post-Trip

Heres a quick list of the things you are going to need to bring for the trip!

  • All weather related clothing
  • lunch/snacks
  • appropriate licenses for area fishing (This includes the Columbia River Endorsement if needed)
  • On Fly fishing trips clients are welcome to bring their own gear if they prefer.

Unforeseen Circumstances

For unforeseen circumstances, we’ll adjust plans for everyone’s safety.
In the event of bad weather that impacts fishing, we allow clients to cancel for “Boat Ride” days. If the water level is unsafe or unfishable, clients will be contacted. We may decide to fish in a different area than planned or cancel the trip. If water conditions are safe and clients still wish to have what we consider just a “boat ride,” we will proceed with the trip, as some clients simply want to enjoy the outdoors and are less concerned with landing the “big one.”
